The Sony ICF-EX5 portable receiver was designed primarily for sensitive medium wave reception, to satisfy the large number of Japanese consumers interested in long distance ("DX") AM reception. For this purpose, it certainly has been phenomenally successful, enjoying a continuous production run since 1985. Like its predecessor the ICF-S5, this analog receiver has great sensitivity and selectivity, and also adds a synchronous detector and double-conversion circuitry.
While not quite suitable for serious transoceanic DX because of its analog design, this highly sensitive portable is a great choice for casual domestic DX, and could be a superb travel portable, with its lightweight (1 kg including batteries) design. Audio quality is quite suitable for its intended function, and unlike most Japanese-market portables, the North American FM band is fully covered. Its medium wave sensitivity is more than enough to exceed that of most modern digital portables, and convince the purchaser that he has indeed obtained one of the classic Japanese radios!
